CABEI and Honduras inaugurate the Villa San Antonio – Goascorán Highway Project
Tegucigalpa, Honduras, July 05, 2008

  • The project’s first phase will be the construction of 49.82 km of highway from Villa de San Antonio to Goascorán. Completion of the highway will boost the physical, economic, and commercial integration of the region. It will also improve Honduran infrastructure so that it may compete in the global market

  • Operation of the Villa de San Antonio – Goascorán Atlantic-Pacific Interconnecting Path will be crucial for the creation of a new transport route in Honduras that will connect production zones to the country’s ports on both coasts. This route will provide access to maritime transport services from Puerto Cortés and Puerto Barrios on the Atlantic; and La Unión, Henecán, and Corinto on the Pacific.

The project consists of constructing 100.44 km of paved highway between Villa San Antonio and Goascorán, passing thru the Honduran Departments of Comayagua, La Paz, and Valle. This will create a faster and more efficient north-south route that will offer a shorter commute, 100 km in approximately 75 minutes. This new highway will also reduce fuel expenditure (an estimated 50% reduction) and provide safer vehicle travel.

This project will also improve overall living conditions of the communities found along the highway’s path. The highway will contribute to area’s economic and social development due to the increase of commerce and agricultural activities. Likewise, this project will lead to the rapprochement of local markets, increasing their competitiveness and complementarities.

Construction of the highway falls under the framework of the Road Transport Initiative of the Mesoamerica Project (previously known as the Plan Puebla Panama). The objective of this project is to help eliminate deficiencies that limit the competitiveness of regional economies, and to remove infrastructure trade barriers between participating states of the Mesoamerica Project. The San Antonio – Goascorán Highway will help to facilitate the connection of Atlantic and Pacific regional ports, inserting Central America within global trade activity.

With this project CABEI furthers its commitment to the Central American integration process and to the insertion of the region into the global economy.
